This morning I participated with a large crowd of civil servants, attorneys, judges, and elected officials in the dedication and naming of the Albert Armendariz, Sr. U.S. Courthouse. The opening of the courthouse resulted from the work of many local, state, and federal leaders and officials over nearly eighteen years. For El Paso and the border of Texas it will stand as a symbol of justice and the rule of law.
I was struck by one of the opening comments of Chief District Judge Fred Biery of the U.S. Western District. As he introduced the great need for this new courthouse he noted that our nation has an insatiable desire for illegal drugs and greed therefore the need for judges and for the rule of law.
In a day when our government is deploying more and more police officers on the streets, and border patrol the protect our borders. In a day when we need to multiply the number of courtrooms and judges to keep up with the demands, and we have to provide more and more cells for inmates. I believe we live in a day when the darkness begs for a response–a night that needs the gospel.
Paul said it well to the Ephesian believers who found themselves surrounded by a pagan culture:
8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10and find out what pleases the Lord. 11Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:
“Wake up, O sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
15Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:8-15 NIV
I believe we need to wake up–we need to wake up to the power and presence of Christ. As Andre Crouch sang a couple of generations ago during a previous dark day.
Jesus is the answer for the world today!
I pray the Kingdom of God will keep up with the justice system and start more and more churches to attack the root of the problem–the human heart in rebellion against its creator. A “born-again” heart changes everything!
