Baptist Basics: Salvation by Faith Alone (sermon outline)

Text: Ephesians 2:1-10

Fully devoted followers of Jesus trust Him alone for their salvation.

  1. 1. Salvation by Works: Hopeless

  • No one can live a perfect life.

1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, Eph 2:1 (NIV)

  • No one can cover their sin by doing enough good works.

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God– 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. Eph 2:8-9 (NIV)

  1. 2. Salvation by Grace: Amazing

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God– Eph 2:8 (NIV)

  • Salvation comes by grace alone as a priceless gift.

  • Salvation comes by faith alone in Christ Jesus.

Final Thought:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”—Jesus (John 3:16 NIV)

  1. Thanks for bringing this out into the light. I appreciate the efforts of people like you to help the rest of us understand the world around us.

  2. Gotta love the bible! And we must be careful how we hear and what we believe. We must judge everything by the word to know what truth really is.

If we’re saved by faith alone, why is baptism by immersion required by the Baptist church? Why is a profession of faith not enough?

    • Richardson

Because it is the first obedient by God after we save.

Baptism is not required for salvation. As a photographer of our baptisms, I hear my pastor say it each and every time he baptizes. Baptism is voluntary, and you can get baptized w/o formally joining the church,(Phillip & Ethiopian) BUT you are going to ruffle quite a few legalistic feathers. Can you join the church, w/o being baptized? Probably not. If Jesus said go and baptize- do you want to wrestle w Him? P.S. Baptism, a created word (not the act of) to protect early Protestants from prosecution, means to be immersed-not sprinkled, etc. Don’t know the original word. Doesn’t matter to me. Have a hard enough time w my native language.

So if I have FAITH in Jesus then I suppose I do not actually have to obey Jesus to be saved. My FAITH is enough. Good to know….. except… Jesus says different:

**** Matt 7:21 Not everyone who says to me,’Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

    As does his half-brother James:

*** Jas 2:20 But do you want to know, foolish man, that faith apart from works is dead?

Matthew 7:21 is saying that they were just talking the talk and not walking the walk. Never does it say in that passage that those men were saved. God knows our hearts. What you do doesn’t separate you from God. We will sin but true believers have a heavy heart till made right with the lord. God does not ask us to be perfect just believe.
